An average of 4.9 million viewers tuned in to watch "Outlander" when it aired in 2015, making it one of the highest rated drama series on Starz and a favorite among audiences and critics alike. The show centers around the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back through time to 18th century Scotland, where she falls in love with her husband's ancestor — an eighteenth-century Highlander named Jamie Fraser. The series has won numerous prestigious awards such as the International Audience Award for Best Drama at the Monte Carlo Television Festival, Golden Satellite Award for Best Actress – Televison (for Caitriona Balfe), and Golden Laurel Crown for Television Series at the Festroia International Television Festival. The show is based on a series of novels by Diana Gabaldon and follows the story of Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back through time to 18th century Scotland, where she falls in love with her husband's ancestor — an eighteenth-century Highlander named Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). This is the first television adaptation of Gabaldon's four-book series. The books, published by Doubleday, were among bestsellers and helped turn Gabaldon into one of the world's most popular writers since the publication of her first novel "Outlander" in 1991. The book series has been adapted into a theatrical film in 1996 and a television movie in 2008. The series was announced by Starz on April 14, 2014 with a 10-episode order for its first season. It was created under the supervision of Ronald D. Moore, known for his work on "Battlestar Galactica", "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", and "Star Trek: Voyager". Sam Heughan was cast as Jamie Fraser on June 9, 2014, and Caitriona Balfe was cast as Claire Randall a month later, on July 2. Filming began in Scotland on August 8, 2014. The show premiered at the Edinburgh International Television Festival in August 17, 2015 and the first four episodes were made available online from August 19 through September 10, 2015. The Outlander series is the first original drama commission from Starz since its split from Liberty Global's Virgin Media unit in late 2013 after a nine-year partnership. The show is inspired by the time-travel and romance elements of Diana Gabaldon's 1991 novel "Outlander", as well as its subsequent sequels "Dragonfly in Amber" (1992), "Voyager" (1994), and "Drums of Autumn" (1997). The series follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back through time to 18th century Scotland, where she falls in love with her husband's ancestor — an eighteenth-century Highlander named Jamie Fraser. The show's creators described it as “an epic romance centered around a strong female character”. cfa1e77820
